Scientific Interests

Main Interests:

I am an observational seismologist, with a dual background in physics – including mathematics, computation and engineering – and Earth sciences – including general geology and tectonics. My work focuses on seismic sources, primarily on earthquakes (i.e., brittle fracturing of rock), but also on movement of fluids in the crust (e.g., volcanic non-tectonic sources) and on sources of ambient seismic noise (e.g., ocean-solid Earth and atmosphere-solid Earth interactions). My research has two main goals: 1) to advance the fundamental understanding of lithospheric deformation and fracture, including the nucleation and propagation of earthquakes, and 2) to use this fundamental knowledge to improve risk mitigation, through innovative hazard assessment both in the long term and in real time. Improved assessment of long-term hazard allows for populations to better prepare, namely for earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Real-time seismology allows for a better response in case of disaster.
