Academic Degree and field of specialization:

Ana Cristina Azerêdo obtained a PhD in Geology (Stratigraphy and Palaeontology) at the University of Lisbon in 1994, with a thesis on Middle Jurassic carbonate units from the Lusitanian Basin, Portugal. In 2007, she obtained the Agregação (Habilitation) in Geology at the same University.

Her main expertise is on carbonate rocks and sedimentary systems and main research focus is on integrated multiscale studies of carbonate systems (facies analysis, microfacies, diagenesis, palaeoenvironmental interpretation, sequence analysis, regional and basinal integration) and, secondarily, micropalaeontology (Jurassi-Creatceous benthic foraminifera, calcareous algae).

The research is developed at the interface of knowledge from the fields of Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, Micropalaeontology, Palaeogeography and Petroleum Geology. The research commonly includes cooperation with specialists with other skills (e.g. geochemistry).

The Jurassic of the Lusitanian Basin has been the preferential target of study but work on and the Cretaceous and on other periods and geographical contexts have also been undertaken. Applications to Petroleum Geology have been developed namely on carbonate reservoirs (e.g. major Pre-Salt oil carbonate reservoirs from Brazil), reservoir facies analogues from Portugal and stratigraphy/sedimentary basin analysis linked to source-rock studies.
