SCIENTIFIC INTERESTS

Main Interests: 

My academic background is in Geodesy, and I had a ten-year industrial career in this field, spanning from cartography to GIS and aerial photography, having later obtained an MSc and a PhD in Geophysics.

Most of my work has been centred on seismic data acquisition and processing, with a main focus on OBS data, chiefly on forward modelling and tomographic methods. I have also been directly involved on the development of new OBS types, including scientific payloads.

I am interested in model uncertainties and how they affect the interpretation of wide-angle seismic refraction datasets. I developed VMONTECARLO, a new method to estimate the uncertainties of wide-angle velocity models that is now regarded as a standard model evaluation tool for forward-modelled WAS profiles.

I was directly involved in the development of a new OBS type, aimed at reducing tidal-induced noise on seismic datasets. I worked primarily on the electronic payloads: dataloggers, release systems and power management.

Within the scope of the UPFLOW project, I worked on data acquisition for global tomography studies and also using machine learning to map current-induced instrument noise events.

Currently, I am working on Distributed Acoustic Sensing for geopyshical, oceanographic and biological research, using the GeoLab fibre optic cable in Funchal.
